Lateral mirage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006891

An optical phenomenon where light rays are bent horizontally due to a strong horizontal temperature gradient in the atmosphere, causing objects to appear displaced sideways. This occurs when air density varies significantly across a horizontal path, such as near a heated wall or a large body of water. Unlike superior or inferior mirages, the distortion is primarily horizontal.
