Lateral mixing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006892

The horizontal exchange of atmospheric properties, such as momentum, heat, or moisture, between adjacent air parcels. This process occurs due to turbulent eddies and other small-scale motions, leading to a homogenization of atmospheric characteristics over a given area. It is quantified by eddy diffusion coefficients in atmospheric models.
