Fata morgana
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005548
A complex form of superior mirage that creates highly distorted and often multiple images of distant objects, such as coastlines, islands, or ships. It occurs when light rays pass through several layers of air with different temperatures and densities, causing them to bend in varying ways. This phenomenon is most common in polar regions or over large bodies of water.
