Dip of the horizon

The apparent angular depression of the visible horizon below the true horizontal plane, as observed from an elevated position. This phenomenon is caused by the curvature of the Earth and atmospheric refraction. The dip increases with observer height and is a factor considered in astronomical and navigational observations.
