Acoustic impedance

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000041

A physical property of a material that describes its resistance to the propagation of sound waves. It is calculated as the product of the material's density and the acoustic wave velocity through it. Differences in acoustic impedance at rock interfaces cause seismic reflections, which are recorded and analyzed in seismic surveys.
