Impedance

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001946

A measure of the resistance a medium offers to the propagation of seismic waves, calculated as the product of density and seismic velocity. Acoustic impedance contrasts at geological boundaries cause seismic reflections. Changes in impedance are used to infer lithology and fluid content in the subsurface.
