Seismic impedance

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003310

A physical property of a rock layer, defined as the product of its density and the velocity of seismic waves through it. Changes in seismic impedance at an interface between two rock layers cause seismic reflections. This property is measured in units of (kilograms per cubic meter) times (meters per second), or Rayls.
