Head wave
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001798
A seismic wave that travels along an interface between two layers with different velocities, refracting critically at the interface and then re-refracting back to the surface. It occurs when the lower layer has a higher velocity than the upper layer. Head waves are often used in refraction seismology to determine the depth and velocity of subsurface layers.
