Group velocity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001762

The velocity at which the envelope of a wave packet or a group of waves propagates through a medium. In seismology, it describes the speed at which seismic energy travels, particularly for dispersive waves where different frequencies travel at different phase velocities. Group velocity is distinct from phase velocity, which describes the speed of individual wave crests.
