Phase velocity
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002772
The speed at which a point of constant phase on a monochromatic wave propagates through a medium. In seismic wave propagation, phase velocity can vary with frequency in dispersive media, such as certain types of rock formations. It is distinct from group velocity, which describes the speed of the overall wave packet or energy.
