Propagation constant
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004425
A complex quantity that characterizes how a wave's amplitude and phase change as it propagates through a medium. Its real part is the attenuation coefficient, describing the exponential decay of the wave's amplitude, while its imaginary part is the phase constant, determining the change in phase per unit length. The propagation constant is a function of the medium's properties, such as conductivity and permittivity, and the wave's frequency.
