Absorption
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000013
The process by which the energy of a propagating wave, such as a seismic wave, is diminished as it passes through a medium, typically converted into heat. This phenomenon causes a reduction in wave amplitude and a change in waveform. Absorption is a key factor in seismic attenuation and affects the quality of seismic data at depth.
