Attenuation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000208

The reduction in amplitude and energy of a seismic wave as it travels through the subsurface. This phenomenon is caused by geometric spreading, intrinsic absorption by the rock, and scattering from heterogeneities. Attenuation is often quantified by a quality factor, Q, where higher Q values indicate less attenuation.
