Attenuate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000207
To reduce the amplitude or intensity of a seismic wave as it propagates through the Earth. This reduction occurs due to geometric spreading, absorption of energy by the rock, and scattering. Attenuation is frequency-dependent, with higher frequencies generally attenuating more rapidly than lower frequencies, which impacts the resolution of seismic data.
