Damping
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000947
The reduction in amplitude of seismic waves as they propagate through the Earth. This energy loss occurs due to absorption, scattering, and geometric spreading, which convert wave energy into heat or disperse it over a larger area. Damping is quantified by the quality factor (Q), where a higher Q indicates less damping.
