Damping
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004852
The process by which oscillations or waves in a system gradually decrease in amplitude due to dissipative forces, such as friction or viscosity. In the atmosphere, damping mechanisms can reduce the intensity of atmospheric waves or turbulent eddies. This effect can be observed in the decay of atmospheric gravity waves.
