Damping
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001549
The dissipation of energy in an oscillating system, which reduces or prevents vibration by converting kinetic energy into another form, such as heat. This effect is achieved through mechanisms like fluid viscosity, friction between surfaces, or the internal molecular friction of materials. The amount of damping is quantified by the damping ratio, where a value of one indicates critical damping, the condition in which the system returns to equilibrium as quickly as possible without oscillating.
