Normal mode
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003926
A specific pattern of motion in an oscillating system where all parts move sinusoidally at the same frequency. In a normal mode, the components of the system maintain constant phase relationships with each other, meaning they reach their maximum displacement and pass through equilibrium at the same relative times. The number of normal modes for a system is equal to its number of degrees of freedom, and any complex vibration can be described as a superposition of these modes.
