A protective operating state that a spacecraft enters automatically after detecting a serious fault, in which nonessential systems are switched off, the vehicle holds a stable attitude with its solar arrays toward the Sun, and the craft waits for commands from the ground. Controllers must diagnose the fault and send commands before normal operations resume.
