Bi-mode

Describing a vehicle or piece of equipment capable of operating using two distinct power sources, which can be selected by the operator. The most common configuration combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor powered by batteries or an external electrical supply like a third rail or overhead line. Bi-mode trains, for instance, can switch from diesel power on non-electrified routes to electric power on electrified main lines.
