An abbreviation for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, a type of hybrid vehicle with a battery that is recharged by connecting to an external electrical power source. A PHEV combines an internal combustion engine with one or more electric motors and can operate in an all-electric mode for a specific range before the gasoline engine takes over. The all-electric range for most production PHEVs falls between 20 and 50 miles on a full charge.
