An abbreviation for electric vehicle, a road vehicle propelled by one or more electric motors using energy stored in rechargeable batteries. Unlike conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines, EVs produce no direct tailpipe emissions and are charged by connecting to an external electricity source. A battery electric vehicle (BEV) is a type of EV that runs solely on battery power, as distinct from plug-in hybrids which also have an internal combustion engine.
