Evanescent
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002098
Describing an oscillating electromagnetic field that does not propagate as a wave but whose energy is spatially concentrated in the vicinity of its source. The field's intensity decays exponentially with distance from the boundary where it was formed, a phenomenon known as an evanescent wave. This effect is applied in near-field scanning optical microscopy to achieve imaging resolution below the diffraction limit of light.
