Rayleigh's resolution limit

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004704

A criterion defining the minimum angular separation between two point sources of light for them to be distinguished as separate by an optical instrument. It states that two sources are just resolvable when the center of the diffraction pattern of one is directly over the first minimum of the diffraction pattern of the other. This limit is proportional to the wavelength of light and inversely proportional to the aperture diameter.
