Dawes resolution limit
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001570
An empirical criterion for the smallest angular separation at which a telescope lets an observer see two stars of equal brightness as separate. William Dawes found it from visual observation, and it is approximately 4.56 arcseconds divided by the aperture diameter in inches, or 116 divided by the diameter in millimetres. It is slightly tighter than the Rayleigh criterion for the same aperture.
