Sparrow's resolution limit
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005501
A criterion for optical resolution that states two incoherent point sources are just resolved when the second derivative of the intensity distribution at the midpoint between their images is zero. This limit provides an alternative to the Rayleigh criterion, particularly for systems with apodization or when a more precise definition of resolvability is needed. It is applied in microscopy and astronomical imaging to quantify the resolving power of an optical instrument.
