Rattler
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004703
A train, especially a freight train, characterized by the loud, clattering sounds produced during motion. These noises originate from the interaction of steel wheels on rails, slack action in the couplers between cars, and the movement of unsecured cargo or loose components. The term is informal but descriptive of the acoustic signature of many older or heavily used trains.
