The amount of free play or looseness present in the coupling system between railway cars. This allows for a small amount of relative movement between cars, which is necessary for smooth train operation and to absorb forces during starting and stopping. Excessive slack can lead to severe coupler impacts and potential damage to rolling stock or lading.
