Lash

The amount of free play or clearance between mating mechanical components, such as gears or threaded parts, before motion is transmitted. This clearance allows for thermal expansion and lubrication but can lead to inaccuracy in machine tool positioning. Backlash is a common term for this phenomenon in gear trains.
