Side play

The amount of axial or lateral movement present in a component or assembly that is not intended to be fixed. This clearance allows for thermal expansion, manufacturing tolerances, or lubrication, but excessive side play can indicate wear or improper assembly. It is often measured in millimeters or thousandths of an inch.
