Safety chain
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005028
A secondary coupling device, consisting of heavy-duty chains, used between railway vehicles as a backup to the primary coupler. In the event of a primary coupler failure, these chains are intended to keep the cars connected, preventing a complete separation of the train. Safety chains are mandatory on many passenger trains but are less common on modern freight rolling stock.
