Drag-chain

A chain that connects a locomotive to its tender, or links carriages and wagons together, so that the pull of the engine is carried through the train. It belongs to older coupling gear in which the chain or link took the pull while buffers took the push. It carries tension only, whereas compression between vehicles passes through the buffers.
