An abbreviation for Transverse Magnetic, referring to an electromagnetic wave mode where the magnetic field vector is entirely perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. In waveguides, TM modes are characterized by having no magnetic field component in the direction of propagation. This contrasts with Transverse Electric (TE) modes, where the electric field is perpendicular to propagation.
