Voigt effect

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006478

A magneto-optical phenomenon where a material exhibits birefringence when placed in a magnetic field that is oriented perpendicular to the direction of light propagation. This induced birefringence causes a phase shift between the components of polarized light that are parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. The effect is closely related to the Faraday effect, but it depends on the square of the magnetic field strength.
