Catapult effect
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006842
The sudden sideways motion of a loose, current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field, caused by the Lorentz force on the moving charges. The force acts at right angles to both the current and the field, so a free wire lying across the field is thrown away from its position. For a straight wire at right angles to the field, the force equals the field strength times the current times the length of wire inside the field.
