Cataract
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000996
A hydraulic dashpot or governor used to regulate the speed of an engine, particularly a reciprocating steam engine. It consists of a cylinder filled with fluid, where a piston's movement is slowed by forcing the fluid through a small, adjustable orifice. By controlling the rate at which the piston moves, the cataract determines the timing of the valve gear's action, thereby governing the engine's strokes per minute.
