Valve gear
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006410
The complete mechanical linkage that controls the operation of the valves in a piston engine, particularly a steam locomotive. It translates the rotary motion of the driving wheels or crankshaft into the precise linear motion required to open and close the intake and exhaust valves at the correct time. Common types, such as the Walschaerts and Stephenson linkages, also provide a mechanism for reversing the engine's direction of rotation.
