Oleo
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003988
A type of shock-absorbing strut used in aircraft landing gear, consisting of a cylinder containing both hydraulic fluid (oil) and compressed gas, typically nitrogen. During landing or taxiing, the strut compresses, forcing the fluid through a small orifice, which dissipates energy as heat, while the compressed gas acts as a spring to return the strut to its extended position. The design is formally known as an oleo-pneumatic strut and is the standard for most aircraft, from small private planes to large airliners.
