Normal mode
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008071
A collective, synchronous motion of atoms in a molecule where all atoms oscillate with the same frequency and phase. Each normal mode corresponds to a specific vibrational pattern and has a characteristic frequency. For a non-linear molecule with N atoms, there are 3N-6 normal modes of vibration.
