Sum band
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011576
An absorption or emission band in a vibrational spectrum that arises from the simultaneous excitation of two or more normal modes of vibration, where the energy of the transition is the sum of the energies of the individual modes. These bands are typically weaker than fundamental bands and provide information about anharmonicity in molecular vibrations. They are observed in infrared and Raman spectroscopy.
