Sultones
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011575
Cyclic esters of hydroxy sulfonic acids, in which a sulfonyl group (SO2) in the ring is bonded to a ring oxygen. They are the sulfur analogues of lactones and are strong alkylating agents because the ring opens readily when nucleophiles attack it. 1,3-Propane sultone, a five-membered example, is used to attach sulfopropyl groups to amines, alcohols and other nucleophiles.
