Sulfonic acids
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011565
Organic compounds containing the sulfo functional group, -SO3H, where a sulfur atom is directly bonded to a carbon atom of a hydrocarbyl group. These are strong acids, comparable in strength to sulfuric acid, due to the highly polarized S=O bonds and the resonance stabilization of the conjugate base. Benzenesulfonic acid is a common example.
