Ketoaldonic acids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013228

Sugars that carry a ketone group and a carboxylic acid group in the same molecule, in equilibrium with a cyclic hemiketal form, and named with the suffix -ulosonic acid. Examples are 3-deoxy-D-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid, a component of bacterial lipopolysaccharide, and the sialic acids such as N-acetylneuraminic acid.
