Oxoacids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008403

An old general name for acids whose acidic hydrogen is bound to oxygen, in a molecule that also contains a further element, the hydron leaving to form the conjugate base. Sulfuric acid, phosphorous acid, hypochlorous acid and carboxylic acids RC(=O)OH are all oxoacids, whereas hydrogen chloride is a hydracid because it contains no oxygen.
