Brønsted acid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001511

A molecular entity or chemical species capable of donating a proton, also known as a hydron (H+), to another species, which is termed a Brønsted base. The reaction between a Brønsted acid and base results in the formation of a conjugate base and a conjugate acid, respectively. For example, in the reaction of hydrogen chloride with water, HCl acts as the acid by donating a proton to H2O, forming the chloride anion (Cl−) and the hydronium cation (H3O+).
