Amphoteric
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000521
Describing a chemical species that can react as both an acid and a base. This behavior can manifest as acting as both a Brønsted acid (proton donor) and a Brønsted base (proton acceptor), or as both a Lewis acid (electron pair acceptor) and a Lewis base (electron pair donor). Aluminum hydroxide is an example of an amphoteric compound, reacting with both strong acids and strong bases.
