Autoprotolysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000999
A proton transfer reaction between two identical molecules, where one molecule acts as a Brønsted acid and donates a proton, and the other acts as a Brønsted base and accepts the proton. This process generates a conjugate acid and a conjugate base. The autoprotolysis of water produces hydronium and hydroxide ions.
