General acid-base catalysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004818

A type of catalysis where the rate of a chemical reaction is increased by proton transfer to or from any acid or base present in the reaction mixture, not just hydronium or hydroxide ions. The reaction rate depends on the concentrations of all acidic and basic species. This mechanism is common in organic and biochemical reactions.
