General base catalysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004820
A catalysis in which the rate in solution depends on the concentration of every Brønsted base present, not only the lyate ion such as hydroxide in water, so the catalyzed rate is a sum of terms, each the product of one base's catalytic constant and its concentration. A base removes a proton from the substrate in the rate-determining step. For a related series of bases the catalytic constants follow the Brønsted relation, in which log k rises linearly with the pKa of the conjugate acid, with a slope beta between 0 and 1.
