Specific acid-base catalysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011096

A type of acid-base catalysis where the reaction rate is dependent only on the concentration of the solvated proton (H₃O⁺ in aqueous solutions) or the solvated hydroxide ion (OH⁻ in aqueous solutions), and not on the concentrations of other acids or bases present. This occurs when the proton transfer steps are very fast compared to the rate-determining step of the overall reaction. The rate law for such reactions includes only the concentration of H₃O⁺ or OH⁻.
